Technical SEO

What is Crawlability?

By Mushbloom · Published and updated

Definition & overview

Crawlability is the ability of a crawler to discover and fetch a website’s pages. Links, server responses, access controls and crawler rules affect it; being crawlable does not mean a page is indexed.

Analogy & mental model

The library door is open, but your book has not necessarily been catalogued.

Check page responses and crawler access before diagnosing ranking or citation problems.

Why Crawlability matters

A search or AI crawler cannot use information it cannot fetch. Access problems should be investigated before content or ranking theories. Crawlability is a technical prerequisite, but pages also need to be understandable, eligible for indexing and useful to a real audience.

Practical business example

A resource looks complete in a browser but its initial response contains no article text. A crawler that does not execute scripts may not see the guide.

Illustrative scenario, not a client case study or promised result.

How Crawlability works

  1. Fetch important URLs and inspect status codes, redirects and access barriers.
  2. Check crawler rules, firewall behaviour and ordinary links to the page.
  3. Inspect the response body to confirm that substantive content is available.

Core components & mechanisms

  • Discoverable links
  • Fetchable response
  • Crawler access rules

robots.txt does not override a firewall, authentication wall or missing page.

Crawlability vs Indexing

Crawlability concerns fetching. Indexing concerns analysing and storing a fetched page; one does not guarantee the other.
